Atlanta Pride was held over July 4th weekend this year, instead of at Piedmont Park. Due to drought conditions and the subsequent watering restrictions, no major events were held at Piedmont Park, since it takes a lot of water to get the grass to recover from such major events. Instead, Pride was held at the Atlanta Civic Center–a lot of asphalt, and hot sun.
Saturday, we visited the Pride Market, and watched a few concerts, most notably the performances by Josh Zuckerman, God-Des & She, and Three5Human.
On Sunday, while we were waiting for the parade to start, a horrendous thunderstorm passed over us. With 40-odd other parade watchers, we all huddled close to a building that had an overhang to shield us from the rain. We waited patiently for the worst to pass so we could make it to our car to go home, expecting that there was no way the parade was going to proceed with the downpour and lightning.
As the rain let up, we were ecstatic to see the police escort that precedes the parade–yay! While it continued to drizzle for most of the parade, the brave marchers put on a great show. The rain receded, and by the end of the parade, clear skies finished out the rest of Atlanta Pride, 2008.
