Jet-Li drives a very cool car in this movie. Towards the end, the story line unfolded a bit predictably, although the ending left some nagging questions. I didn’t feel I had all the answers. Lots of action scenes with blood, cars, swords, and guns. Overall, this was a good watch.
MOVIE: The Messengers
Crazy father kills family. New family buys house and is haunted by dead family. Dead family gets revenge on crazy father that returns to house. Birds (ravens, actually) are frequent omens of the terrible thing that happened in the house, and there are scences reminding me of Hitchcock’s “The Birds”. There were a few spine-tingling moments, and some scenes distinctly recognizable as effects from The Ring and The Grudge, but they were shown just–well, because they could be shown. They did not appear to add to the story, nor did they seem to have much purpose other than time fillers. The sunflowers looked really nice on Blu-ray Disc (BD). Rent it if you don’t have anything else to do, but if you miss it, you won’t be sad.
MOVIE: Apocalypto
On Blu-ray Disc (BD), this movie is really great, visually. The scenery is lush and detailed, bright and vibrant. Whereas for most High-Definition (HD) movies HD doesn’t add a noticeable impact, I found that I was often distracted by the scenery instead of focusing on the movie itself. It wasn’t until about 5 minutes into the movie, when we began to wonder if there was any English spoken–but apparently, that’s why subtitles were invented! The subtitles did not take away from the movie experience, and on BD they were very crisp and easy to read. Great story, easy to follow, suspenseful, and action packed. There was some fun had with a guy that was not producing grandchildren for his step-mother, and that had a funny twist. Highly recommended!

TV: Stargate SG-1
It’s done–after 10 years, SG-1 has met it’s final episode. I watched from the beginning, but then took several years off–I don’t remember when I left, but I remember feeling that things were getting a bit…um…crazy. I turned to Farscape, and loved that Sci-Fi show. When that came to an end and Ben Browder (and Claudia Black) started on SG-1, I tuned back in.
SG-1 has had some interesting episodes, it’s been fun, and there’s been the occasional references to real-life topics–there was even a mention of the vice presidential bird shooting fiasco.
SG-1 had it’s ups and downs with the usual fare of pressing the reset button at the end of an episode to get the characters out of some quandry. I’ve enjoyed most of the episodes, and am sad to see the end.
Movie: The Lakehouse
Hmm… romance? or sci-fi flick? Before starting it, I recalled that we heard some friends saying that they did not like it. Kevin didn’t like the movie. I did. While talking about the movie, Kevin didn’t like the whole time-warp theme…letters going back and forth in time, and resolving the time differences and all that.
I think if you’re a sci-fi fan, you’ve more than likely come across this type of theme before, and can understand the intricacies of time travel and all the paradoxes that come from that. But for a romance movie, that apparently doesn’t mix all that well. That would explain why we heard some negative stories about it.
So, if you can resolve time-theory, and understand that you risk the destruction of the time-space continuum by meeting yourself when you travel through time, then you just might like this movie. On the otherhand, if you’re not really into that sci-fi stuff, there’s a good chance it won’t be your first movie of choice.
Movie: D.E.B.S.
A funny, time waster. Don’t look for deep, thought provoking or surprising plot twists–well, maybe a very small one that sets the basis for the story line: girl ditches boy followed by girl meets girl. 🙂
This isn’t made with a handheld camcorder; it has a good soundtrack, and good effects. We liked this one for its funny spots. This is a renter, tho you might consider a (cheap) purchase just in case you want to have something playing on TV as you clean house.

These pictures are from the Georgia Aquarium, taken during it’s opening week, around Thanksgiving 2005. It took us about 3 hours to go through it all.

Atlanta Pride 2006
Atlanta Pride 2006. Notice that 2005 is missing–we didn’t make it to Pride that year. For 2006, the festivities at the park were cancelled due to bad weather.
