Is it Halloween Yet?

So, I’m still doing work stuff late this evening (11:15 PM on a Friday nite–yes, I have NO life)…and am chatting with a coworker, talking about my website…and it hits me. The last time I updated the site was December last year! Ok—time to do something about that.

So, just a quick note to let everyone know, No, I’ve not (totally) forgotten that I have a website that needs to be maintained.

No halloween party this year..Sorry! But I do have several photo albums in the works. Some two-year old pictures from NYC (yes, I’ve been slacking a bit) and more recently some pictures from Chattanooga–Ruby Falls, Rock City, and Atlanta Botanical Gardens–Nikki in the Garden, and Scarecrows, Pride 2006. I can’t promise when they’ll make it to the site, but if I can find some extra time between work and school..well, then I’ll get them on the site!  🙂

Laterz!

New Job

I’m starting my third week at Federated Systems Group. FSG is a subsidiary of Federated Department Stores. With this position I’ve completed my career transition into management, and am now supervising a team of developers. Before, I was churning out code while supervising–a path I had been on since 2000.

This is a great move for me, and I’m very impressed with the group of people I am working with.

Thanks to everyone that helped me in gaining networking contacts during my job search!

Movement on the Career Path

Morgan Stanley recently reorganized the Atlanta based IT group they acquired through the 2003 purchase of Lend Lease Real Estate Investments, and merged it with two New York based IT groups. Mine was one of three positions eliminated in the process.

This has given me the opportunity to reflect on my ten-year career with Morgan Stanley, and to consider options that will more fully utilize the software development, project management, and leadership skills that I have developed over the years.

Please visit my professional portfolio pages at http://www.davidjperez.us for information about my skills and qualifications. I am especially interested in acquiring contact information for any professionals working in the companies that I’ve identified in my target list, and would appreciate any leads.

Busch Gardens

From November of 2003…

While in Tampa for a wedding, we spent a few hours at Busch Gardens.  We got some great animal shots, while we were on the Safari Tour.  We were the only ones on the tour, so got the full attention of the animals around us as we offered them treats.

These pictures were taken with the Sony Mavica CD-1000.

Aruba 2004-08

Aruba…a tiny little desert island (well, 17×6 miles).  Windy as heck, but beautiful.

We spent 4 nights in Aruba recently, with two of our friends.  We had a great time, and certainly experienced adventure on our “jeep tour gone wild”, also know as “the path to the Natural Pool is treacherous”.  Well, we got lost, and didn’t make it, but the off-road jeep experience will never be forgotten.  Now that we know the way, perhaps we can make it next time?

We stayed at the Tamarijn all-inclusive resort area.  While it was decent, there were some things we wish had been better.  The pool area was always a mess.  Because of the wind, cups, paper plates, and straws littered the area.  Apparently, there wasn’t any staff dedicated to picking up the trash that people left behind.  The pool water itself could have used more chemicals or something…it was quite cloudly and dirty looking early in the day.

Being all-inclusive means drink and eat, drink and eat.  Well, almost.  It could take 10 minutes for you to get a drink, and when you ended up getting one, it was usually pretty weak.  Stick with Bacardi & Coke, or the local beer, Balashi.  Some folks in our party complained that the desert tray needed more variety.  And, you’ll also want to glance at your food to avoid eating cooked flies or other flying insects that end up on the grill or sautee pan.  😮

Be sure to check out the other resorts close by…Tamarijn is part of the “mega resort” (or something like that).  You can walk to the Divi Resort and your armband will get you drinks and food there, too.  That resort seemed nicer (the grass is always greener on the other side): less kids, cleaner pool, and a more packed and livelier crowd at night.  The accomodations weren’t as attractive as the Tamarijn’s, tho.

When touring the country-side, wear heavy shoes – we found several 1” long cacti needles embedded in our rubber soled casual shoes, and some of them went through the sole and pricked at our feet.  We thought we had rocks in our shoes, but nothing came out when we shook out the shoes.  It took some work removing those needles, too.

Be sure to put your (expensive) camera equipment in protective gear (water-proof plastic case/bag or something similar) when taking pictures at the southern-most tip of the island.  The ocean spray is sure to cause an issue with your camera’s lenses or internals.  I had to send my camera and lens in for repair, and ended up having to purchase a new lens.  Be sure to bring lens cleaner liquid and cloth to clean the ocean spray off your lens, otherwise you’ll get fuzzy pictures.

Cool Pool Party 2004-07

Pictures from the third annual Lenox Heights Cool Pool Party! With around 100 in attendance, this was our most successful pool party yet! Many thanks go to the volunteers on our Homeowner Relations committee for putting this together, as well as to our sponsors that donated food, drinks, and prizes: Roasters Rotisserie, Cedars, Far East Cafe, and Diageo.

Look for pictures from the (ice cold) water balloon tossing contest, hula-hoop contest, musical chairs, and the back-breaking limbo dance contest!

Pictures were taken with the Canon EOS 10D.  Adam Steigrod also provided some of the pictures (camera info not available).
